Paint Booth For Pump Painting
A pump is a device that moves fluids , liquids or gases , or sludge, by mechanical action. This Mechanical action can be reciprocating or rotary motion, and consume energy to perform mechanical work moving the fluid. There are different types of pumps available in the market. The paint applied over the pump also depends on the type of application. The application mainly includes the type of fluid you desire to pump, the distance you desire to move the fluid, and the quantity you require to get over a particular time frame. However, it is complicated to recognize accurately what kind of pump you must select. The identifying of the pump can be done with the design as well as positions.
Spray Painting process to be conducted in a Pump paint booth - The paint has excellent resistance to various chemicals , moisture & salts in the atmosphere. Before any paint film is applied surface preparation is a must . Pumps have multiple components , cast iron , en8 , shafts , stainless steel etc. Each part need to be treated separately due to the metallurgic properties. Some components like shaft are to be kept unpainted surfaces , so that they do not loose their mechanical properties.
The following surfaces will not require protective coating. To determine unpainted areas eg Anodized Aluminum Grounding Pads Brass Machined Surfaces Bronze Motor Leads Chromium Plated Metals Porcelain Enamel Finishes Copper Rubber Galvanized Steel Stainless Steel Glass.
Stage 1 - Pre-treatment of Pump casting before sending to paint booth for pumps. Cleaning & pre-treatment of cast surface is most important stage , as soon as casting are checked and ok for further process. The pre-treatment of pump casting can be achieved by minimum of seven tank process or 10 tank process. If motors/Pumps are to be used for corrosive atmosphere, or for outdoor application , we recommended 7 stage zinc phosphating.
This process can even be carried out by Shot Blasting Method.

Stage 2 — Electric Pump painting — Usually small pump casting are placed over a jig so
that, multiple casting can be painted with primer or red oxide in the pump paint booth.
With jigs at use and right spray guns desired paint film in microns is achieved. Larger &
heavier pump casting are to be painted singularly , material handling is preferred in this case.
With the selection of right paint booth undesired over sprays are removed from the painting
area , thereby creating a smooth finish over the cast.
Stage 3 — Application of primer for additional coat building & repainting before
final finish coat can be applied.
At assembly stages & water testing stage pump primer surface often tend to get
grease & oil marks. At water testing stage even there is a change of percolation
of water in the pump cavities. These marks are to be removed thoroughly with
cleaners and again a mid primer coat is applied in the pump spray booth. We
also recommend an air blowing facility to remove the trapped water.
Stage 4 — Application of final finish colour to assembled pump — After the above stage the assembled pumps are either dried on conveyor for pump painting/drying or by other batch process or directly wet on wet process.
The finish paint is applied by two methods for smaller pumps Conveyorised pump painting method & for Large frame size Paint booth for pumps with material handling equipment.
Autocoat has supplied many Pump paint booths as well as conveyorised pump painting lines, which are running almost in 3 shift basis trouble free. We have designed, developed & manufactured Slat Conveyor for heavy assembled pump painting. Conveyorised pump painting is very fast & economical.
We have also developed, industrial pump painting with monorail handling equipment for heavy pumps (centrifugal pumps) with heavy duty slat conveyor for transit , this method enhances the capability of the painter to lift , lower & also to rotate the heavy pumps. Our Pump spray booths are very efficient & match the pollution board norms.
Training sessions are been conducted to educate the painters & subordinates to get maximum productivity & effective maintenance.
Our major clients from Pump industry are Ksb Pumps , Idex cooperation , Kishor Pumps Ltd , Investa Pumps, & many more.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pump paint booth?
A pump paint booth is a robust industrial spray booth designed specifically for painting pump casings, impellers, volutes, bearing housings and complete pump body assemblies. The booth is engineered for heavy cast-iron or stainless steel components, complex internal geometry and corrosion-resistant finishes that pumps require.
Which types of pumps need dedicated paint booths?
Centrifugal, vertical turbine, submersible, multi-stage, slurry, chemical process, fire-fighting and industrial process pumps. Any pump with cast-iron, ductile iron, stainless steel or bronze casings benefits from booth-applied finish for corrosion protection, finish quality and operator safety.
How heavy can pump castings be in the booth?
Autocoat pump paint booths handle castings ranging from small water-pump volutes weighing 5–10 kg up to multi-tonne industrial pump bodies for petrochemical and power plant applications. Reinforced hooks, conveyor capacity and floor loading are designed around your heaviest casting and daily volume.
What pretreatment is used for pump castings?
Pump castings typically need shot blasting to Sa 2.5 standard, degreasing, water rinse, phosphating, passivation and DM rinse. Rough sand-cast surfaces often require multiple cleaning passes before painting to ensure tight adhesion and prevent solvent pop-out from porosity.
What paints are applied to pump bodies?
Industrial pumps typically receive epoxy primer with PU or polyester topcoat. Submersible pumps require anti-corrosion zinc-rich primer systems. Slurry pumps use abrasion-resistant high-build epoxy. Chemical pumps may need fluoropolymer topcoats. Autocoat configures booth airflow and bake cycle to match.
Are pump booths suitable for centrifugal pump manufacturing?
Yes. Centrifugal pump volutes, impellers and bearing housings paint excellently in Autocoat side-draft booths with appropriate hook design, balanced air supply and dedicated masking for shaft journals and machined faces. Many leading Indian centrifugal pump OEMs use Autocoat booths.
Can the booth handle both indoor and outdoor pumps?
Yes. Indoor pumps use standard epoxy-PU paint systems. Outdoor and exposed pumps need anti-UV topcoats and heavier corrosion-resistant primer systems. The booth handles both with media swap and slight chemistry adjustments — making one booth suitable for diverse pump product lines.
Do Autocoat pump booths support touch-up after assembly?
Yes. Many pump OEMs use a smaller dedicated touch-up booth for assembled pump units before dispatch — covering scratches from machining and assembly. Autocoat supplies both main painting booths for raw castings and assembly-line touch-up booths in the same factory layout.
What is the cost of a pump paint booth?
The cost of a pump paint booth varies depending on size, type, and automation. Key factors include booth dimensions, hook capacity, conveyor system, pretreatment integration, drying oven capacity and level of automation. Contact us or send enquiry for exact cost matched to your pump range.
Does Autocoat have references in pump painting?
Yes. Autocoat has installed pump paint booths at multiple major Indian pump manufacturers — covering centrifugal, submersible, slurry and industrial process pumps. Reference site visits can be arranged after NDA. Past project case studies and client lists are available on request.
