Most paint booths don't need HEPA — and buying it when you don't is wasted money. But for pharma, medical device and electronics coating, HEPA is non-negotiable. Here is the complete 2026 guide to when you need it, which grade, and what it costs.

HEPA filtration is one of the most over-specified and under-specified elements of lab spray booths — some buyers pay for H14 when F9 would do, others skip HEPA entirely on applications that genuinely need it. This guide explains the filter grade hierarchy, exactly when HEPA is required, and what it costs to add to your paint booth filtration system.

2. H13 vs H14 — What's the Real Difference?

H13 HEPA

Captures 99.95% of 0.3 micron particles (Most Penetrating Particle Size per EN 1822). Standard for general cleanroom-adjacent paint booths, lab spray booths, and most pharmaceutical applications.

H14 HEPA

Captures 99.995% of 0.3 micron particles — a 10× improvement in leak-through over H13. Used for critical cleanroom applications, ISO Class 5 – 6 cleanrooms, semiconductor manufacturing, and highest-grade pharmaceutical/medical device coating.

💡 Cost reality check: H14 costs 20 – 35% more than H13. Most lab spray booths — even pharmaceutical tablet coating trials — only need H13. Reserve H14 for genuinely critical cleanroom-grade requirements, not as a default upgrade.

3. When Do You Actually Need HEPA?

HEPA filtration is required or strongly recommended for:

6. Supply Side vs Exhaust Side Filtration

HEPA filters are used almost exclusively on the supply air side — delivering ultra-clean incoming air. Exhaust air (carrying paint overspray and solvent vapours) uses paint arrestor filters (Andreae paper, concertina, or Bafa pad) designed to capture liquid paint particles.

Putting HEPA on the exhaust side would clog almost immediately with wet overspray — impractical and expensive. A few specialised cleanroom exhaust systems use HEPA for containment of hazardous particulates (certain pharmaceutical active ingredients), but this is rare and highly application-specific.
